The Napoli Centrale railway station (Italian: Stazione di Napoli Centrale ) is the main station of the southern Italian port city of Naples . He is on the list of 13 Grandi Stazioni (in German: Large stations ) of the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). The operator is the Grandi Stazioni company .

Next to Central Station, the city has over Naples' three major train stations, regional, or national significance: the Napoli Campi Flegrei railway station , the Napoli Mergellina railway station near the seaside promenade and the Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station , which is located under the complex of the main station Napoli Centrale .

history

Old reception building

The first construction plans for the station building go back to 1866, under the supervision of the architect Enrico Alvino . In 1904 a monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi was erected in front of the station . The current building was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi in 1954 and built in place of the old train station in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi . The new station was set back two blocks, creating a large forecourt. Work on the modern train station was completed in 1960.

Since 2005, the Napoli Centrale station has been in a phase of restructuring and architectural upgrading under the direction of Dominique Perrault . To this end, all platforms have been equipped with plasma screens , pedestrian access to the taxi stands in front of the building and a corridor with escalators and moving walks to the tracks of the Circumvesuviana (EAV) have been built. The Fontana Partenope fountain in the station was restored as part of this work.

structure

Special architectural features of the station building are the pyramid-shaped roof elements, made famous by a music video by the Italian singer Mina , and the tree- shaped pillars that support the canopies in the entrance area and on the platforms.

Of particular interest is the Fontana della Sirena fountain from the 18th century, which was designed by Francesco Jerace . The fountain was built in the park of today's Piazza Garibaldi and moved to Piazza Sannazzaro in 1924 .

From the basement you can reach the Piazza Garibaldi station , which is served by trains on line 2 , and the station of the private Ferrovia Circumvesuviana (EAV).
