The Caserta – Foggia railway is an Italian railway that connects the provincial towns of Caserta in Campania and Foggia in Apulia . It is operated by the Italian state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato and is considered the main traffic axis between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea in southern Italy.

construction

The concession for the construction and operation of the railway line was granted by parliamentary resolution of August 21, 1862 .
At first, however, financial problems stood in the way of implementation and it took five years before the first section between Bovino and Foggia could be handed over to its destination on January 27, 1867.
On May 26, 1870, the last section between Santo Spirito and Starza was continuously passable in seven further sections .

expansion

electrification

The Benevento – Foggia railway was the first line to be electrified with the 3000 volts direct current that is still common today . The overhead lines were installed between 1923 and 1928. As a result, the state railroad used the E.626 electric locomotive, which was newly designed for freight and passenger traffic . The electrification was continued in Naples until 1931 .

Dual track

Work on a second track began in the 1990s. On December 3, 1997, a partially new double-track line was inaugurated between the Ponte - Casalduni station and Apice , which replaced the previous, heavily winding line. The Vitulano - Foglianise station has been replaced by the new Vitulano station. The rest of the route is single-track.

future

In the next few years, the line is to be expanded to double tracks and upgraded for high-speed traffic. In particular, it is intended to serve as a connection for TEN project No. 1 , the Berlin - Palermo railway axis , as a connection to the Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII .

The second track between Cervaro and Bovino was put into operation at the end of June 2017; this section is the first section of the line to be double-tracked and passable at speeds of up to 200 km / h. The contracts for the eastern sections Naples – Cancello and Cancello – Frasso Telesino have already been awarded; work on these sections should be completed by 2022. From 2019, the expansion work on the entire route should have started.
