The Benevento – Cancello line is a single-track electrified line and connects the cities of Naples to Benevento via Cancello . The route is operated by the private company MetroCampania NordEst .

history

In 1852 a British company was awarded the contract to build a railway line between Benevento and Naples through the Caudina Valley . In the years that followed, several projects were proposed, but for various reasons they did not lead to construction. It was not until 1905 that the project was approved under pressure from the municipalities of the Valle Caudina. The plan was drawn up by the engineers and Cilli Scalabrini in 1901 and was particularly aimed at the needs of the people in the Valle Caudina.

On July 10, 1913, the line was completely completed. Initially, five pairs of trains ran daily between Cancello and Benevento. First, passengers had to change trains between Naples and Benevento in Cancello. It was not until 1927 that an agreement between FS and SFS could be reached through which trains from Benevento could also reach Naples directly.

During the Second World War, the line suffered considerable damage. The army blew up on 29 September 1943 important parts of decommissioned route.

After the war, the rebuilding of the railway began immediately by the owners and employees. In 1947 the line could be reactivated as a whole. In 1955, electrification took place with 3 kV direct current.

The railway line still has great potential for the region around the Valle Caudina. There are opportunities for further future development in modernization. Programs in this direction already exist and are being implemented. The modernization of the railway line between Naples and Cancello is to be completed by October 2022, the line speed will be increased to 130 km / h after the modernization. One of the most important issues is the elimination of the double loop at Santa Maria a Vico . With a new route, the length can be shortened by seven kilometers and would result in higher speeds and a reduction in travel times.
