Orsara di Puglia is an Italian municipality with 2604 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is located 37 km east of the provincial capital Foggia in the province of Foggia in northern Apulia , on the border with the province of Avellino in Campania .

The neighboring communities are Bovino , Castelluccio dei Sauri , Celle di San Vito , Faeto , Greci ( AV ), Montaguto ( AV ), Panni , Troia .

Before the great wave of emigration in the 1950s and 1960s, there are more than 8,000 Orsaresi who lived in this place.

Orsara is characterized by agriculture. In the area around Orsara there are numerous olive groves, as well as cultivation areas of various agricultural products.

Orsara is nationally famous for its jazz festival "Orsara Musica", which is of great national renown.

history

Orsara di Puglia dates back to the first centuries after Christ. Its name comes from the Latin words Ursus the Bear, like Aer , the area.

In earlier times bears, foxes and wolves lived in the forests of Irpinia in large numbers. In fact, Orsara di Puglia was called Orsara Dauna Irpina until 1884, when it got its current name. In 1929 Orsara moved from the province of Avellino to the province of Foggia through territorial reforms.
