Faeto ( French-Provencal Faìto, [ [faˈitə] ]) is an Italian municipality with 614 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia in Apulia . Together with Celle di San Vito , Faeto forms a Franco-Provencal language island in Apulia.

history

There are two versions of the founding history of Faeto. The first names Waldensian refugees as founding members who were persecuted and expelled from southern France at the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century. The second thesis, now generally accepted, is based on documents from the 13th century, which show that French soldiers who fought for the Anjou against the Saracens settled in the region, more precisely in Faeto and Celle di San Vito . Based on the language spoken to this day, it can be proven in any case that the founders came from the southern French region. The toponym Faeto (Frankoprovenz. Faìte , Provenence. Fayéte ) is derived from the Latin word fagetum "beech forest" (from Latin fagus = "beech").

Population development

Like many other small municipalities in Italy, Faeto is struggling with high levels of emigration. In 1911 the place had just under 5000 inhabitants, today there are only just under 700. Young people in particular see no future for themselves and their families and have tended to leave the place for decades.
