Apricena is a southern Italian city with 13,035 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Foggia and is located in the Apulia region .

Apricena is about thirty kilometers north of Foggia . The neighboring municipalities are Lesina , Poggio Imperiale , Rignano Garganico , San Marco in Lamis , San Paolo di Civitate , San Severo and San Nicandro Garganico .

Geographical location

Apricena lies on the Gargano and extends into one of the largest flat areas in Italy. The place is divided into two parts by a plateau. The older part lies on the plateau and consists of the old town of Apricenas, which is built around the hunting lodge, and the commercial street Via Roma , which leads to the city park and the residential areas surrounding it.

In the newer, lower part of Apricena are districts that were built only a few decades ago, such as the district of 167 or the Cottonificio , near which the main street Viale Papa Giovanni XXIII ( Via della Madonna ) of the city is located. This begins at the church Chiesa della Madonna Incoronata - located just outside the city - and extends to a small park on the plateau of the city, which is adorned by a statue of St. Padre Pio .

Attractions

The most important cultural monument of Apricena is the hunting lodge, popularly known as Tirriolo , of Frederick II. It was built during his reign; with him the history of the city begins.

politics

Local politics was shaped for decades by the Italian Communist Party and its successor PDS and the L'Ulivo alliance . Since May 2014 Antonio Potenza has been mayor of the citizens' list “United for Change”.

economy

Apricena is called La cittá del marmo e della pietra (German: The city of marble and stone) and is known for the diverse marble and stone industry. The area around the city is characterized by wine and olive growing .

traffic

The place has a train station on the Ancona – Lecce railway line . The journey time to Foggia and Termoli is around 30 minutes each. Since June 2016, all trains on the San Severo – Peschici line have been serving the new Apricena Città station. The Apricena superiore station on the line to Peschici, high above the city , has only been used for train crossings for decades . The station offers a remarkable view of the city. The station, which fell into disrepair in the 1980s, has been renovated in an exemplary manner in recent years and is now used privately.

The place has a connection to the A14 Pescara –Foggia with the junction San Severo . The junction is around 15 km from the Apricena.
