In 1043 the establishment of the Barony Civitate became the starting point for several feuds. In 1053 the Normans defeated the outnumbered papal army at the Battle of Civitate . Civitate founded a diocese together with San Severo . In 1580 the seat was moved to San Severo. Today San Paolo di Civitate is titular bishopric under the name Civitate .
It was not until the 15th century that today's San Paolo was founded .
