The SS 16 Adriatica is one of the most important and longest state highways in Italy. It leads from Padua in Veneto to Otranto in Apulia . It is 1000.670 km long and follows the Italian Adriatic coast . The SS 16 was completed in 1928 and runs parallel to the A14 from Rimini . The road operator is ANAS . Since the two motorways A13 and A14 were completed in the mid-1980s, the SS 16 has only been of secondary importance and serves more tourist purposes.

Route

Regional border between Marken and Abruzzo on the SS 16

The route starts in Padua and then passes the Euganean Hills to Monselice . The next place is the provincial capital Rovigo . Then the road crosses the Po and with it the border between Veneto and Emilia-Romagna . The nearest town is Ferrara . Then the SS 16 changes direction to the southeast and leads through the undeveloped Po Valley .

The nearest town is Ravenna , where it crosses the Ravenna motorway slip road. The SS 16 is an expressway for a short distance near Ravenna , as is the case with Cesenatico , where it runs by the sea for the first time and passes the tourist resorts of the Adriatic. Before Cesenatico there is still Cervia . Shortly afterwards the SS 16 reaches the A14 and with it Rimini . The road leads from Rimini directly along the sea and past the following places: Riccione , Cattolica and Pesaro , the first place in the Marche and where the landscape is already mountainous.

The next places are Senigallia and Ancona . After Ancona follow the places Porto Recanati and Civitanova Marche and then Porto San Giorgio , Grottammare and San Benedetto del Tronto .

After the regional border between Marche and Abruzzo , the first places are Martinsicuro , Alba Adriatica , Giulianova and Roseto degli Abruzzi . Then comes Pescara , the regional capital of Abruzzo. The nearest centers are Ortona and Vasto , with the SS 16 always running directly along the sea.

After Vasto is the regional border between Molise and Abruzzo . The only places in Molise are Termoli and Campomarino . This is followed by the border with Apulia . After the regional border, the SS 16 changes course and runs first inland at San Severo and then to Foggia .

1000 kilometer stone near Otranto

At Cerignola the SS 16 becomes an expressway again to Barletta , where it meets the coast again. Other places are Molfetta and Trani , after which Bari is reached.

After Bari the towns of Polignano and Mola di Bari follow . The SS 16 runs right by the sea and is still an expressway. Between Monopoli and Brindisi it runs through undeveloped land and is a normal road again from Fasano . After Brindisi it runs south to Lecce . After Lecce it becomes an expressway again and leads to Maglie through various small towns.

At Maglie it makes a bend to the east and then reaches the sea again at Otranto. After almost exactly 1000 km it reaches its end point.
