  • The Strada Statale 223 di Paganico (abbreviation: SS 223 ) is an Italian state road in the Italian region of Tuscany . It connects the cities of Grosseto and Siena and has a length of about 67 km. It is operated by ANAS SpA, which is why it is toll-free along its entire route, and it is also part of the European route E78 . It was completed in 1974.

    course

The SS 223 begins on the northern outskirts of Grosseto , where it branches off from the Aurelia variant at the Grosseto- Roselle junction. It first leads through the northern Maremma , past the ruins of the old Etruscan town of Roselle. On its course towards the northeast, it leaves the plain around Grosseto at Batignano and now runs through the hills between the rivers Gretano, Lanzo and Farma . It passes the municipalities of Campagnatico and Civitella Paganico (each of the eponymous places Paganico , with 2 departures, and Civitella Marittima ).

From Paganico the SS 223 leads into the mountains and also runs over numerous bridges and tunnels and finally reaches the 1.5 km long Casale di Pari tunnel, the provincial border between Siena and Grosseto. Immediately behind it, at the village of Bagni di Petriolo, there is also a 900 m long and over 100 m high valley bridge over the Farma river . Here the road enters the municipality of Monticiano and runs along the river Merse to the local area of Sovicille . Here it crosses partly wooded, but also agriculturally cultivated terrain as far as Siena and crosses the rivers Sorra and Tressa shortly before Siena . In the south of Siena, the SS 223 branches off to the west bypass from Siena to Florence. The eastern course of the road remains part of the European route 78 and leads to Arezzo and Fano .

    Development status and plans

The SS 223, together with the SS 73, is part of the E78 Grosseto - Fano , which connects the Adriatic coast with the Tyrrhenian Sea . Due to the increased volume of traffic and the importance of this connection in Italy, it was decided to expand the entire route of the E 78 to 4 lanes to the "SGC Grosseto - Fano". This is intended to take into account the creation of an efficient infrastructure between the two cities. The expansion was divided into several construction sections:
