The European route 78 starts from Grosseto via Strada Statale 223 di Paganico to Siena and then to Monte San Savino . The course follows the Strada Statale 73 Senese Aretina. East of Monte San Savino, the E 78 crosses the A1 ( E35 ). There is no direct connection. The E 78 passes Pieve al Toppo (municipality of Civitella in Val di Chiana ) to then cross Arezzo further south . At Sansepolcro, the E 78 crosses the E 45. Together with the E 45, the E 78 then leads on the Strada Statale Tiberina (Strada Statale 3bis) in a southerly direction to Capanne Pian di Sotto. Here the E 78 then continues on the Strada Statale 73 to San Giustino in a north-easterly direction, then as Strada Statale 73 to di Bocca Trabaria from Borgo Pace parallel to the Metauro via Mercatello sul Metauro and Sant'Angelo in Vado to Urbania , Fermignano and Canavaccio (municipality of Urbino ). At Fano the E 78 then crosses the Autostrada 14 and ends directly in the urban area of Fano.
The European route 78 crosses the Italian provinces of Grosseto , Siena , Arezzo , Perugia and Pesaro-Urbino , in this sequence the regions of Tuscany , Umbria and Marche .
