history

Medieval tower and Roman bridge

The foundation of Fermignano is said to go back to a settlement by the Roman legionary commander Firmidio around 200 BC, who called the settlement Firmidianus. The battle between the Carthaginians under Hasdrubal and the Romans under the consuls Salinator and Gaius Claudius Nero , from which the Romans emerged victorious, is known from the year 207 BC . The exact location is still unknown today. A bridge over the Metauro from Roman times is still preserved.

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Fermignano was part of the Duchy of Urbino until 1631 the entire Duchy was incorporated into the Papal States.

traffic

Fermignano is on the European route 78, which is only a provincial road (SP 4) . The railway lines to Urbino (from Fano ) and to Pergola (on to Fabriano ) have been closed since 1944 and 1987 respectively.
