Gaius Claudius Nero

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Claudius Nero was a Roman senator and military officer in the 3rd century BC. Chr.

In 214 BC He first appeared in the second Punic War when he fought with Marcus Claudius Marcellus in Sicily against the Carthaginians . As praetor in 212 BC BC he recaptured Capua and successfully fought against Hannibal's troops near Venusia .

After the death of Publius Cornelius Scipio and his brother Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus , he received the supreme command in Spain from the Senate. However, he was unable to prevail against Hasdrubal there and was soon recalled by the Senate.

In 207 BC Chr. Claudius became together with his opponent Marcus Livius Salinator consul and defeated Hannibal at Grumentum . He succeeded in intercepting a Carthaginian messenger from whom he learned of Hasdrubal's approach to Italy. Immediately he met him with 6000 men and 1000 horsemen and defeated him together with his official colleague Livius Salinator in the battle of the Metaurus , in which Hasdrubal was killed. He sent the head of the defeated enemy to his brother Hannibal. The Senate granted him an ovatio for this achievement .

In 204 BC Claudius - again together with Livius Salinator - was elected censor . He appeared again in 201 BC. BC when he made a trip to Egypt to take action against Macedonia from there.
