The municipality is located about 53.5 kilometers south-southwest of Pesaro and about 28 kilometers south of Urbino . Cantiano belongs to the Comunità montana del Catria e Nerone and borders directly on the province of Perugia .

The community was settled by the Umbrians early on . It also gained importance as a station on the Via Flaminia, which is still an important traffic route today.
