The State Road 3 Via Flaminia , and Strada Regionale 3 Via Flaminia (abbreviation: SS 3 or SR 3 ) is an Italian highway in the Italian regions of Lazio , Umbria and Marche .

history

Today the SS 3 largely follows the course of the old consular road of the same name, Via Flaminia, throughout its entire route . This was already 220 to 219 BC. Founded and since then connects Rome with the Adriatic coast. (For history see Via Flaminia / history )

administration

Until 2001, the Via Flaminia from the capital Rome to Fano on the Adriatic coast was designated as the SS 3 state road. Due to the Decreto Legislativo n. 112 del 1998 , jurisdiction was transferred to the regions of Lazio, Umbria and Marche.

After negotiations between ANAS and the Umbria region, the sections between km 67 and 93, 103 and 173 as well as 195 and 197 were returned to ANAS and expanded as an expressway.

In Lazio, Via Flaminia is managed by ASTRAL as SR 3. In the Marche it is administered as SP 3 by the Province of Pesaro and Urbino .

Even if the Via Flaminia continues to function and be perceived as a trunk road with uniform numbering, it is now operated by three different bodies in different hierarchies.

course

The SR 3 starts in Rome at Piazzale Flaminio. Then it crosses the Tiber on the Ponte Flaminio and leads north to the Grande Raccordo Anulare , Rome's motorway bypass. The next section follows the Via Flaminia close to the course of the Tiber and leads north through Lazio past Civita Castellana .

At Magliano Sabina it crosses with the A1 . Here it crosses the Tiber once more and continues, now in Umbria as SS 3, to Narni . To the north of the city, it has been expanded to six lanes for around 20 km. Here the SS 3 bis branches off northwards , which leads via Perugia to Ravenna . After a few more kilometers, you will reach the city of Terni , which is also the capital of the province of the same name . The four-lane expansion ends behind Terni and the SS 3 leads over the Valico della Somma at 646 m. The next larger town along the Via Flaminia is Spoleto , where the next four-lane expansion begins. Further north it reaches Foligno , where it crosses with the SS 77 . After just a few kilometers, the SS 75 branches off via Assisi to Perugia.

Between Foligno and Nocera Umbra there is only a two-lane expansion, between Nocera Umbra and the intersection with the SS 76 it is again expanded with four lanes. Subsequently, it leads again in two lanes at Sigillo and Scheggia, where there is a junction to Gubbio . In the further course it is already in the Marche and leads as SP 3 past Cantiano and Cagli and crosses the Apennines . From Acqualagna to Fossombrone , the SP 3 has again been expanded to four lanes. From there it leads as a subordinate street to its end point in Fano. On the last section of the route, the parallel four-lane SS 73bis assumes the role of a trunk road.
