The Strada Statale 242 di Val Gardena e Passo Sella ( SS 242 , in South Tyrol mostly simply called Grödner Straße ) is a state road in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It leads through the landscape of the Dolomites, which were awarded the title of UNESCO World Natural Heritage in 2009 . The 31 km long road begins in Waidbruck or, using a variant, in Klausen , where it branches off from the Brennerstraße , and crosses Val Gardena to the Sella Passto end at 2240 m. The road is one of the most important connections in the entire Dolomite region.

history

Typhon at the Purger Bridge, the former Evangelist Bridge in Ortisei; The only stone bridge made of porphyry on Grödner Strasse, built in 1854 and expanded in 1917
Unveiling of the monument on October 12, 1921

The street opened on October 26, 1856. It was built on an initiative of the Val Gardena merchants Johann Baptist Purger and his brother-in-law Johann Moroder in 1843. Due to the question of costs, however, the alignment did not begin until 1853. The new road gave the valley, which had previously been very closed, decisive economic and tourist impulses. The initially bumpy and, at 14%, rather steep road replaced the older connection route via Castelrotto . In 1914 the road was finally completed.

The costs for this were covered by a toll station set up in Waidbruck . There is no evidence of how long the St. Ulrich - Wolkenstein road section has existed. What is certain is that the communities of St. Christina and Selva have had to build and maintain the road from Pescosta to Plan themselves since 1855 and have set up a toll station in Pescosta since 1892 in order to ensure better repair and maintenance of the road. The population of St. Christina had to pay two tolls, one in Pescosta and one in Waidbruck.

monument

A monument, unveiled in 1921, honors the pioneering work and the merit of the former mayor Johann Baptist Purger (1805–1872) for the construction. The bronze monument positioned at the entrance to Ortisei comes from Ludwig Moroder Lenert .
