The SS 114 Orientale Sicula is one of the most important and longest state roads in Sicily . It runs along the east coast of the island (hence the nickname) and connects Messina in the north via Catania with Syracuse in the south. Parts of the 154-kilometer-long traffic axis are built like a motorway and coincide with the European route 45 . The A 18 motorway runs largely parallel to the SS 114 . The tourist attractions along the SS 114 include the widely visible Etna volcano and the well-known tourist town of Taormina .
