The Via Aurelia

The Via Aurelia is an old Roman road that led from Rome to Pisae ( Pisa ) or Luna ( Luni ) along the coast of the sea.

It was only later that the name Via Aurelia was extended to its continuation, the coastal part of the Via Aemilia Scaura and the Via Julia Augusta , so that the Via Aurelia finally extended beyond Arles to join the Via Domitia there. The distance from Rome to Arles is 962 kilometers.

The Via Aurelia today

The modern Via Aurelia begins in the Italian capital Rome and runs north along the sea to Ventimiglia on the border with France . It crosses several Italian regions: Lazio , Tuscany and Liguria .

The SS 1 begins in the urban area of Rome, where it is not initially signposted as SS 1. The actual SS 1 only begins at the intersection with the A90 . The route turns east and reaches the A12 at Torrimpietra . There it turns north and leads near the Tyrrhenian Sea past the city of Tarquinia to Grosseto.

The SS 1 runs four lanes between Grosseto and Livorno. ( Variant Aurelia )

From Pisa the SS 1 runs mostly parallel to the A12 past the city of Viareggio . In Liguria, the SS 1 mostly runs along the coast of the Ligurian Sea . Here it connects the cities of La Spezia , Genoa , Savona and Ventimiglia .

In the district of Grimaldi near Ventimiglia there is the border with France , where it connects to the D 6007 and leads directly to Menton .

Variant of Aurelia

The Aurelia variant is a four-lane state road in the Italian region of Tuscany , which connects the cities of Livorno and Grosseto . The route is a strada extraurbana principale within Italy's road network , comparable to a highway-like road .

It is part and part of the important Via Aurelia trunk road , which is classified as the SS1 state road and connects the cities of Rome and Ventimiglia . It is also part of the E80 .

The Aurelia variant runs parallel to the original Via Aurelia, which was therefore downgraded to a provincial road (SP 152 in the province of Grosseto and SP 39 in the province of Livorno) with the name "ex aurelia" after its completion in the nineties . It is managed and operated by ANAS and is toll-free throughout its entire process.

The origin of the Aurelia variant is at the Grosseto - sud junction , the end is at the Livorno motorway junction ( A12 Genoa - Rome ). It is interrupted between the Quercianella and Livorno - Antignano junctions .

The road is of great importance for economy and tourism, as it represents the southern extension of the A12 and through it tourist places such as Cecina , San Vincenzo and the island of Elba can be reached. Industrial and port locations such as Rosignano Marittimo and Piombino are also connected.

The Aurelia variant is currently being expanded to become the A12 Genoa - Livorno - Rome , as it is currently interrupted between Cecina and Civitavecchia . In 2010, construction began on the first construction lot, between the Rosignano Marittimo and Cecina- north junctions. After this work has been completed, the Aurelia variant will lead northwards from the Rosignano M. junction towards Livorno, the missing section between Quercianella - Livorno Antignano will be added.
