Giuncarico is a fraction of the Italian municipality of Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto , region of Tuscany .

geography

The place is about 7 km southeast of the capital Gavorrano and about 19 km northwest of the provincial capital Grosseto in the Maremma . Giuncarico is 170 m and has about 400 inhabitants. Approx. The river Bruna flows 2 km to the east and forms the municipal boundary between Gavorrano and Roccastrada and Grosseto. Other places in the immediate vicinity are in the northeast Ribolla (district of Roccastrada, approx. 8 km), in the east Sticciano (also Roccastrada, approx. 10 km), in the southeast Montepescali (district of Grosseto, approx. 8 km) and Vetulonia (district from Castiglione della Pescaia , approx. 6 km south).

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in a document of the monastery of San Salvatore di Monte Amiata from the year 772. In the 11th century the place is referred to as fortified (fortificata) and belonged to the area of ​​the abbey of Sestinga. In the 13th century the area was under the Aldobrandeschi , but the direct control of the place was under the family of the Pannocchieschi d'Elci di Trivale . In the same century, they submitted to Siena , but retained power in the place until the 15th century. After the Senese defeat against Florence in 1555, the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany .

  • Chiesa di Sant'Egidio , church in the town center near the fortification gate. First mentioned in 1267. The campanile was built in the 15th century. The painting Madonna del Rosario con Santa Caterina da Siena e San Domenico dates from the early 18th century and comes from the environment of the Senese artists.   • Oratorio del Santissimo Crocifisso , church just outside the town center. Was built in 1892 to replace the previous church, Chiesa della Confraternita di San Bernardino . This probably came from the 15th century.

  • The closest junction to long-distance traffic is the Giuncarico junction on the Strada Statale SS 1 state road ( Via Aurelia , approx. 4 km).
  • The place was connected to the rail traffic via the Stazione di Giuncarico station and was on the Livorno- Grosseto railway line . From 1892 to 1960 the station was the terminus of the approximately 8 km long Ribolla- Giuncarico line. At that time, the station was used to transship goods from the Ribolla mines, which were closed in the years following the 1954 mine disaster.
