Roccastrada is an Italian municipality with 8892 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Grosseto in the Tuscany region .
geography
The community extends over 284 km². It is located about 25 km north of Grosseto and 90 km southeast of Florence between the Maremma and the Colline Metallifere in the climatic classification of Italian communities in Zone E, 2181 GG. The most important bodies of water in the municipality include the Asina (20 of 20 km in the municipality), the Bai (19 of 19 km in the municipality), the Farma (16 km in the municipality) and the Lanzo (6 km in the municipality). They are all part of the Ombrone river system .
The districts include Montemassi , Piloni , Ribolla , Roccatederighi , Sassofortino , Sticciano and Torniella .
The neighboring municipalities are Campagnatico , Chiusdino ( SI ), Civitella Paganico , Gavorrano , Grosseto , Massa Marittima , Monticiano (SI) and Montieri .
history
The place originated in the Middle Ages as a property of the Aldobrandeschi family . In the 12th century, Roccastrada was from the Republic of Siena conquered. After the defeat of the Senese Republic against the Florentine in 1555, the place became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . After the unification of Italy, Roccastrada was assigned to the province of Grosseto.
Attractions
- Chiesa di San Nicola (sometimes also called San Niccolò), the first time in 1283 in writing mentioned church in the village, probably older origin. Was significantly expanded in the 16th century and completely restored in 1938. The travertine facade was renewed in 1954. Contains two frescoes attributed to the artist Giovanni Maria di Ser Giovanni Tolosani from Colle di Val d'Elsa (16th century). - Madonna delle Grazie , church just outside Roccastrada on the road to Torniella / Piloni / Sassofortino. Probably originated under the Aldobrandeschi and was taken over by Sant'Ansano as the Carmelite monastery in the 13th century . The frescoes could have been created by Giovanni Maria di Ser Giovanni Tolosani , as well as the wall painting Cristo in pietà fra i dolenti .
- Abbazia di San Salvatore a Giugnano first time 867 from Abbazia di San Salvatore in writing mentioned Abbey about 5 km south-west of the capital.
