history

The first settlements arose in the 15th century on the road to Montieri. This part is now called Capo Ciciano . Today's center, called Piedi Ciciano , was built in the 16th century and grew steadily in the 17th and 18th centuries due to its location and proximity to the Merse. In 1640 the place had 69 inhabitants, in 1745 160 inhabitants and 378 inhabitants in 1833. The place then received further influx in the 19th century through the pyrite mines in Boccheggiano (municipality of Montieri, province of Grosseto), which are about 6 km south-west.
