history

The place was first mentioned in 1076 as Torgnalla , then in 1188 by Pope Clemens III. who mentioned the Chiesa di San Giovanni Batista . From 1216 to 1274 the Aldobrandeschi ruled the place. Ranieri da Torniella, who was loyal to them, ruled the town from 1233 and became a population of Siena in 1237 . Nevertheless, Siena had to intervene militarily in 1255, with the fortifications badly damaged and the local lords allied until then, including the son of Rainieri, Alberto, interned in Siena. Five years later, the place finally came under the rule of Siena. From the second half of the 15th century the Senese family of the Bulgarini ruled the place until it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany after the defeat of the Senese Republic by the Florentine in 1555 .
