Scalvaia is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of Monticiano in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

The place is about 6 km southwest of the capital Monticiano, about 30 km southwest of the provincial capital Siena and about 75 km south of the regional capital Florence . The closest neighboring towns are Monticiano (8 km) and Torniella , a district of Roccastrada (4 km). The place lies in the range of hills Colline Metallifere at 489 m and has about 70 inhabitants. The Farma river flows just south of the village and forms the border between the municipality of Roccastrada and the province of Grosseto .

history

By Bartolomeo Gherardini, on behalf of Cosimo III. de 'Medici en route, the place was referred to in 1676 as a villa belonging to Torniella. In 1749 the place came to Chiusdino and in 1833 it became part of Monticiano. In 1845 the place had 117 inhabitants who belonged to Monticiano.

Attractions

  • Chiesa di San Biagio , first mentioned in the 13th century as part of the Pieve di Luriano. Was rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in the 1930s. The campanile was also created .
  • Monumento ai martiri di Scalvaia , monument near the Località Acqua Nera, also called Monumento ai martiri del Monte Quoio . It was created in 1945 and commemorates the sixteen partisans who were murdered here by Italian fascists on the night of March 11, 1944.
