history

The "Castello di Monticiano" is first mentioned in 1189 in a document from Pope Clement III. when the Castello was under the influence of the Bishop of Volterra . After the Battle of Benevento in 1266, it was occupied by Siena because the place gave refuge to the fugitive Ghibellines . During the war between Siena and Florence and before the defeat of Siena, Monticiano became part of the Duchy of Tuscany on November 30, 1554 .

During the Second World War , the place suffered considerable damage. The Antico Palazzo Comunale (13th century, also called Palazzo Pretorio and Palazzo del Podestà ) and the main gate of the city walls, the Porta Maggiore (also called Porta Senese and Porta di Sopra , was located in front of the Giusto e Clemente church) were destroyed.
