history

The place is mentioned for the first time in 896 in documents of the diocese of Volterra, which equipped the place with a castle in the 11th century. 1186 were from Heinrich VI. the Pannocchieschi confirmed as gentlemen. In 1201 Casole d'Elsa declared itself a free commune, but was conquered by Siena in 1240 after a long siege. This was confirmed after the Battle of Montaperti in 1260 by the negotiations in Castelfiorentino on November 25, 1260. There were revolts against the Senese rule in 1312 and 1313, both after visits by Henry VII. The city walls were reinforced in 1481 by Francesco di Giorgio . In 1492 the place gave itself the statutes . In 1554 Florence conquered the place during the war against Siena. At the end of the 18th century, the village was conquered by Napoleon's troops, who stayed until 1814. Thereafter Casole was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany , where it remained until 1861, when it was integrated into the Kingdom of Italy . The place name addition d'Elsa was added in 1862. During the Second World War , the place suffered considerable damage, so the two (only) historical city gates Porta ai Frati (northern gate) and Porta Rivellino (southern gate) were destroyed.
