Monteguidi is a district ( fraction , Italian frazione ) of the municipality Casole d'Elsa in the province of Siena , Tuscany region in Italy .

geography

The place is about 6 kilometers southwest of the capital Casole d'Elsa and about 25 kilometers west of the provincial capital Siena . It is 421 meters and has about 150 inhabitants. The closest places are Mensano (also district of Casole d'Elsa, approx. 4 km east) and Montecastelli Pisano (district of the municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina , approx. 5 km southwest). The Cecina River flows north about 2 km west of the village.

history

The place was named after the castle of Count Guido der Aldobrandeschi . The place is first mentioned on October 22, 1208 in a document from Sovana , when Ildebrando (with Sillano, Belforte and other places) leaves the place to his children. In the further course of the 13th century the place fell to Siena. In 1595 the place had a little more than 400 inhabitants, in 1833 about 370.

Attractions

  • Chiesa dei Santi Andrea e Lorenzo , church in the upper part of the village, which was built in the 12th century. Contains a canvas painting by Alessandro Casolani ( Madonna del Rosario ) and the work Madonna co Bambino from the workshop of Niccolò Di Segna .
  • Chiesa della Visitazione (also Compagnia della Visitazione , formerly Sant'Andrea ), church in the town center near Porta Sud, Piazza Nino Bixio. Contains the painting Visitazione di Sant'Elisabetta by Sodoma (Giovanni Antonio Bazzi), which was later painted over.
  • Fortification walls (hardly existent) with the gates:
    • Porta Nord (settentrionale), archway still in place.
    • Porta Sud (meridionale), still present today.

Others

Monteguidi is the hometown of Mara, the main character in Carlo Cassola's novel La ragazza di Bube .
