Carlo Cassola (born March 17, 1917 in Rome , † January 29, 1987 in Montecarlo , Province of Lucca ) was an Italian writer.

Life

Cassola took part in partisan fighting in Tuscany during World War II . After the end of the war he was a high school teacher in Grosseto .

Carlo Cassola was born in Rome on March 17, 1917. His father was an editor of the magazine / newspaper Avanti! (literally: forward!) and he was initially a socialist. Over time, however, he became a staunch mussoliniano (= Mussolinian supporter). As a high school student in 1932, he befriended a group of young intellectuals. He read Dedalus e Gente di Dublino and was enthusiastic about American cinema. He joined the group from Ruggero Zangrandi and Mario Alicata. In the academic year 1935/36 he completed a law degree at the University of Rome. In 1937 he completed military service. He published his first stories: Paura e tristezza (literally fear and sadness) appeared in Il Meridiano di Roma . He graduated in civil law in 1939 and joined a group of Florentines. They wrote La vista (sight), Il cacciatore (hunter), and Tempi memorabili (remarkable times). In 1940 he married and then served in the war.

In 1949 he won the competition in history, philosophy and education and was then able to teach in Foligno and Volterra. After the liberation in 1944, he enrolled in the party, in which he remained until 1946. He wrote Le Amiche in 1947. In 1948 he settled in Grosseto, where he stayed until 1962. Il taglio del bosco was created and published in 1954. He became the father of a daughter. He wrote Fausto e Anna in 1949 an autobiographically inspired novel that was published in 1952. In 1953 the "Ponte" published: La casa sul Lungotevere (later got the title Esilitati ) and began to write La casa di via Valdier and Il soldato . With an Italian intellectual group he went to China in 1955, about which he wrote a report. There met a young library director from Grosseto: Luciano Bianciardi and wrote in collaboration with him I minatori della Maremma . 1956 came out Il matrimonio del dopoguerra , Viaggio in Cina and La Casa di via Valadier . Il soldato , I minatori della Maremma and Edition: Il taglio del bosco . he published in 1958. He wrote La ragazza di Bube in 1960 , a story of loyalty and renunciation / sacrifice inspired by a real story. He published Un cuore arido in 1961. He also wrote numerous other publications in the following 16 years. After a long and serious illness, he died on January 30, 1987 in Montecarlo in the province of Lucca.
