The Val Curciusa is an alpine high valley in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Located east of the San Bernardino Pass , it stretches between the Rheinwald and Misox . In the northern German-speaking part it is called Reuenta l.

location

The valley exit of the Val Curciusa lies south of Nufenen ( 1525  m above sea level ). It stretches almost ten kilometers south as a wedge between the uppermost part of Misox and the border with Italy. The Val Curciusa ends on the Bocchetta di Curciusa ( 2417  m above sea level ), a pass crossing that is visible from San Bernardino in a south-easterly direction.

The valley is traversed by the Areuabach, which flows into the Hinterrhein near Nufenen . Although the valley drains to the north, around 85 percent of the area belongs to the municipality of Mesocco located south of the watershed . Only the northernmost area from the confluence of the Areua River into the Hinterrhein, about two kilometers to the south, belongs to the municipality of Nufenen.

The European watershed runs over the Bocchetta di Curciusa .

To the east of the valley, the highest point is the Pizzo Tambo ( 3279  m above sea level ), to the north of this and the Areua Pass the Guggernüll ( 2886  m above sea level ). On the west side, south of the junction of the Val Vignun, lies the Piz de la Lumbreida ( 2983  m above sea level ), to the north of it the Einshorn ( 2944  m above sea level ). Pizzo Ferrè ( 3103  m above sea level ), Piz di Pian ( 3158  m above sea level ) and Piz Blanch ( 3037  m above sea level ), which lie on the border with Italy and have small glaciers, form the southern end of the valley . To the south of the Bocchetta di Curciusa is the Pizzo Curciusa ( 2871  m above sea level ), north of the Piz Motton ( 2854  m above sea level ).

Accesses

Although the valley flows into the Hinterrhein in the German-speaking Nufenen, it largely belongs to the Italian-speaking area, which is also reflected in the field names. A marked mountain path leads steeply from the village of San Bernardino to Bocchetta di Curciusa ( 2419  m ), from where you can descend to Alp Curciusa Alta on a path that is not continuously visible.

A much better alpine path then leads to Alp da Rog and further north to Nufenen in the Rhine Forest . Access is possible from the west from the Val Vignun via the Strecc da Vignun ( 2373  m above sea level ) or from San Bernardino or the pass of the same name, as well as from the east via the Areua Pass ( 2508  m above sea level ).

The northern end of the valley of the Val Curciusa seen towards the south, only up to here the municipality of Hinterrhein extends. View into the valley.

Uses

The Curciusa Alta achieved national fame through a pumped storage lake project , which was withdrawn in 1999 shortly before a federal court ruling on the need for protection «for economic reasons».

The Val Curciusa is one of the few remaining larger valleys in Switzerland in which neither water is drawn nor a roadway exists. It is only accessible on foot. On the second top valley chamber, the Curciusa Bassa, there are cattle, to the astonishment of many hikers, and horses that are summered there. Between Curciusa Bassa and the Curciusa Alta, the Val Rossa branches off to the west. This can also be reached directly from just below the Strecc da Vignun via an alpine hiking trail.

The valley is now a nature reserve .
