Blazon : In red oblique left silver broad ax with golden handle.
The ax represents the clearing work of the first settlers. The name of the community is interpreted as Novena (new clearing).
geography
Nufenen, the second highest village in the west-east running trough valley of the Rhine Forest , is located to the left of the Hinterrhein opposite the mouth of the Areua River . The municipal ban extends across the valley and reaches the watershed against the Vorderrhein area in the north at the Valserhorn ( 2886 m above sea level ) and Bärenhorn (2929 m) . To the right of the river, the peaks of Einshorn (2944 m, highest point in the municipality) and Guggernüll (2886 m) dominate on both sides of the mouth of the Areua valley, the upper section of which, as Val Curciusa, is politically part of the Misox . Nufenen was the only municipality in the valley to have at times the looser form of settlement that is otherwise typical for Walser areas , but since the 19th century only the clustered village on the historic San Bernardino route has been inhabited all year round. Characteristic of the inner Rhine Forest are the poor forest on the more gently sloping, sunny side of the valley flank and the countless hay stalls in the belt of meadows and pastures that reach up to 2250 m.
In 1997 54.9% of the community area was used for agriculture, the forest took up 14.8%, the settlements 0.9%. 29.5% were considered unproductive.
Neighboring communities are Vals , Safien , Splügen , Mesocco and Hinterrhein .
history
Up until the 13th century, the inner Rhine Forest - today's communities Nufenen and Hinterrhein - served farmers from the Schams as alpine pastures. Around 1280, at the instigation of the Barons von Sax -Misox and the Barons von Vaz, German-speaking ( Walser ) colonists settled in the Pomatt . In 1343 the village was first mentioned as Ovena . The economic foundations of the place belonging to the Gray Bund in the Three Leagues as the neighborhood of the Rheinwald court were agriculture (cattle breeding) and the pass traffic over the San Bernardino. As the former largest village in the valley, it is still the political capital today, although the central functions have now been transferred to Splügen. The opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882 hit the Graubünden transport industry hard; the population of Nufenens fell from 1850 to 1990 by almost two thirds.

economy
Nufenen is still dominated by agriculture. As of January 2000, 54 people were employed in agriculture, 6 in the commercial sector and 20 in the service sector. Many farming families live and work in the village, who already used organic agriculture in the 1960s and 1970s and today follow the guidelines of the organization bio-suisse work. Nufenen has its own mountain cheese dairy and processed 1.5 million kilos of milk from 16 dairy farms in it in 2019. A small sawmill and a medium-sized carpentry shop are operated in the village and the Volg maintains the village shop. The valley's tourist infrastructure is concentrated in the neighboring Splügen.
Public infrastructure
Today the kindergarten for the entire Rheinwald is located in Nufenen. There used to be a village school, but it was closed due to a lack of students. All students in the Rheinwald attend the school in Splügen , the cultural and economic center of the valley.
Nufenen is on the A13 motorway and is connected to the public transport network with the post bus line (Chur–) Thusis – Bellinzona.
Attractions
The simple reformed church from 1643 and some stately town houses are in the center of the village .
