Donat ( German Donath ) is a municipality in the Viamala region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
It was created with effect from January 1, 2003 from the union of the previously independent communities Donath and Patzen-Fardün . At the same time as the merger, the place names were adapted to the current Romanesque spelling: the place name Donath became Donat, the place name Patzen zu Pazen and the place name Fardün zu Farden.

The new municipality of Donat had 234 inhabitants when it was unified and is therefore still a small municipality.

In silver (white) an upright red griffin (lion griffin ) with a flight split by red and black and black fangs, in the right muzzle holding a blue sword with a gold grip. Adoption of the coat of arms of the Marchion family, which played an important role in the village's history.
history
When the connecting road to Wergenstein was built in 1926, workers discovered two bronze artifacts, a carved stone object and human skeletal remains near the Valtschiel Bridge. In 1927/28 Walo Burkart carried out further excavations. Four grave goods were found in the vicinity: a bronze ax, a bronze dagger, a bronze needle point and a cut stone object. In 1961 five more burials were discovered in stone boxes when the road was widened . It was a double burial of adults, a double grave for children and a single adult burial . Grave goods - two bronze needles - allow dating to the end of the Early Bronze Age . After the evaluation, the graves were filled in again.

Originally, the inhabitants of all three communities spoke Sutselvisch , a Graubünden Romance dialect. In 1880 the communities were almost monolingual. In 1910, 85% and 88% respectively still spoke Romansh. Little changed until World War II, and in 1970 144 of the 169 inhabitants were Romansh. While the majority of the population in Donath speaks Romansh today, Patzen-Fardün had a German-speaking majority for the first time in 2000.

A total of 149 (= 76%) of the population understand Romansh. Italian is spoken very sporadically. German and Romansh are the two official official languages.

The Donater Church , the Pazen-Farden Church and the Valtschiel Bridge designed by the engineer Robert Maillart are listed as historical monuments .
