Pignia (German and until 1952 Pignieu ) was a municipality in the Swiss canton of Graubünden until December 31, 2008 .
It belonged to what was then the Schams district in the Hinterrhein district . On January 1, 2009, Pignia merged with Clugin and Andeer to form the municipality of Andeer.
geography
Pignia lies on a terrace on the right bank of the Hinterrhein at the western foot of a mountain range, the highest point of which is Piz Curvér . The village is located eleven and a half kilometers south of Thusis and consists of the actual village and the Alpine settlement of Bavugls ( 1940 m above sea level ). Of the entire municipal area of 1343 hectares (ha), 572 hectares are usable for agriculture, 496 hectares of which are alpine farms (Maiensässen). The mountainous character of the municipality is proven by the 436 hectares of unproductive area. Although the proportion of Romansh speakers fell from 96% to 90% between 1880 and 1941, the actual language change did not begin until the second half of the 20th century. German is the only official language, and the proportion of Romansh speakers is falling steadily.
