The Valtschiel Bridge is a single-lane road bridge made of reinforced concrete in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . It connects the villages of Donat and Casti . The bridge was designed by Robert Maillart and the contractor was Nicolaus Hartmann & Cie. from St. Moritz .

The bridge, a flat arched bridge in which the massive parapets and the roadway serve as reinforcement, was completed in 1926. It crosses the Valtschiel ravine with a span of 43.2 meters. It is the oldest still existing tied arch bridge in Maillart and is one of his main works. Today the bridge is only used by pedestrians; the road traffic is led over a new bridge in the east of the Valtschiel bridge. The municipality of Donat has owned the bridge, which is under cantonal monument protection, since 1995.

Maillart's new idea at the time to create bridges as an aesthetically pleasing engineering art was not understood by everyone. In 1933 the architect Hermann Rukwied criticized a “violation of the proportions” and an “obviously too weak supporting arch”. Max Bill , who wrote a book about the civil engineer on Maillart's 75th birthday, criticized the “incomprehensible heaviness” of the side connecting structures, but praised the bridge as “extremely beautiful”. The bridge was renovated in 2013 due to damage, mainly caused by draining water and the effects of frost. The renovation project was proposed in 2009 by the organizers of the Transviamala Lauf together with the Beverin Nature Park and the Donat municipality and supported by a body of private and public donors under the authority of the Donat municipality.
