Plan of the late antique fort

Sucidava is the former capital of the Dacian tribe of the Suci . It is located in today's urban area of Corabia , Olt district in Romania . There was a Roman settlement here in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. To the southeast of it was a late antique fort. The defensive walls of this garrison from the 4th to 5th centuries can still be seen today. Roman baths ( thermae ), a Christian basilica from the 5th to 6th centuries and streets were also found.

The fort's “secret well” is noteworthy, an engineering masterpiece of its time, which was supposed to ensure the water supply even during a siege.

A bridge over the Danube was built here during the reign of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great ; the inauguration took place in 328 AD. The bridge was over 2,400 meters long, making it one of the longest bridges in ancient times . It was mentioned by Sextus Aurelius Victor after the middle of the 4th century. It is believed, claimed, that it was built entirely of stone. This was also confirmed by the Byzantine chroniclers Theophanes Confessor and Georgius Cedrenus . The bridge was also depicted on a gold medallion minted in Constantinople. It only existed for a short time. A pillar (foot) can still be seen today.
