The name goes back to the fact that the original settlement was built from the remains of a capsized Genoese ship ("corabia" is the Romanian language name for "sailing ship", also " galley "). The city became an important port around 1880.

Under the communist regime, Corabia developed into a sizeable industrial city, with a sugar refinery, furniture factory, tannery, fiber production plant, etc. However, the population has declined in recent years. Many residents moved to larger cities after many factories closed.

Corabia is one of the central places in the Olt district. The villages of Tudor Vladimirescu and Vârtopu are incorporated into the city.

The remains of a castle ( Sucidava ) are also worth mentioning. This goes back to the Roman period. Nearby there is the “Secret Fountain” (an unusual technical monument) and the Orthodox Cathedral “Holy Trinity” (one of the largest buildings of its kind in Romania), as well as a statue in the middle of the city, which is the starting point of the city of Corabia Commemorates the fighting of the War of Independence of 1877/78.
