Piatra-Olt is a town in Olt County in Little Wallachia in Romania .

location

Piatra-Olt is located in the west of the Wallachian Plain on the right bank of the Olt River . The district capital Slatina is located about 10 km northeast.

history

Archaeological research has shown that the city's region has been inhabited since the Neolithic . See Romanian historian in unincorporated village Enoseşti the site of a Roman settlement and fortress Acidava .

Piatra-Olt was first mentioned in 1529 as the property of the Tismana monastery , the today incorporated (and divided) village of Criva as early as 1519.

The village, which is still rural today, experienced an upswing due to the construction of the railway line from Bucharest westwards to the Romanian-Hungarian border at Orșova at that time . When the line from Corabia on the Danube to Râmnicu Vâlcea in the Sub-Carpathian region started operating a short time later , Piatra-Olt became an important railway junction in southern Romania.

In 1989 Piatra-Olt was declared a city.

The main industries in the city are agriculture, textile and metal industries, and railroad-related activities.

population

In 1930 there were around 4200 people living in the area of ​​today's city. The 2002 census counted 6,347 inhabitants, including 5,749 Romanians and 597 Roma . About 2200 lived in Piatra-Olt itself, the rest in the five incorporated villages.

traffic

Both local trains and express trains stop at Piatra-Olt station. There are good rail connections to many of the country's larger cities, including Bucharest , Craiova and Sibiu . The place is on the national road Drum național 64 from Caracal to Râmnicu Vâlcea .
