history
Archaeological research has shown that the city's region has been inhabited since the Neolithic . In the second half of the 1st millennium AD, several small settlements existed in the area of today's city, from which three villages - Drăgăneşti, Uibăreşti (later Peretu), Comani - emerged in the Middle Ages. Uibăreşti was first mentioned in 1475, Drăgăneşti in 1526 and Comani in 1593. In 1860 Drăgăneşti (with the incorporated place Peretu) and Comani received the status of a municipality. In 1908 a hospital was mentioned in Drăgăneşti, and in 1934 a local newspaper appeared. After the Second World War, prefabricated buildings were erected, drinking water pipes were laid and the place was electrified. From 1950 to 1968 Drăgăneşti-Olt (the name suffix "Olt" was added to differentiate it from other localities called Drăgăneşti) was part of the then administrative division of Romania seat of a Rajon . 1968 Drăgăneşti-Olt was declared a city.
The city's main industries are agriculture and food processing. The Olt river is dammed up in Drăgăneşti-Olt to form a lake with a hydroelectric power station.
