Potcoava is a town in Olt County in Great Wallachia in Romania .
location
Potcoava is located in the Câmpia Boianului Plain , part of the Wallachian Plain . The district capital Slatina is located about 20 km southwest.
history
Potcoava was first mentioned in a document in 1423 in a decree of the Wallachian prince Dan II . The oldest church is attested since 1684, a school in 1813.
The town, which had long been dominated by agriculture, changed its character after oil and gas deposits were discovered during the Second World War and have since been exploited. Other important branches of business are the food and textile industries.
In 2004 Potcoava was declared a city.
population
In 1930 there were around 4500 people living in the area of today's city. The 2002 census counted 6111 inhabitants, including 5637 Romanians and 472 Roma . About 2600 lived in Potcoava itself, the rest in the four incorporated villages.
traffic
Potcoava is located on the railway line from Piteşti to Piatra-Olt . Only local trains stop at Potcoava and Sinești stations , currently (2009) around six per day and direction. There are good bus connections to Slatina .
