description
Already in ancient times the urban area was settled by the Romans , who built the Orșova castle there, the civilian settlement of which later developed into the Municipium Dierna .
In 1873 the city was incorporated into Severin County . In 1923 Orșova was named a city and in 1968 it was allocated to the Mehedinți district as a result of the administrative redistribution of Romania.
The city is divided into three parts: South and North Orșova and Gebaure (the central part). Orșova has a shipyard and a ship station. On the occasion of the construction of the SIP Danube power plant , large parts of Orșova were rebuilt, as the original city, called "Old Orșova" ( Vechea Orșova or Orșova Veche ) by the locals , was flooded. Before the dangerous cataract stretch was defused in the course of the power station construction by raising the water level, the city was an important stop for shipping. In the Danube near Orșova was the island of Ada Kaleh . The island was also flooded with the construction of the Danube power plant.
Orșova is the starting point for boat trips to the Iron Gate (two to five hours)
Residents
In Orșova, large parts of the population traditionally belong to ethnic minorities, including Germans ( Banat Berglanddeutsche ), Magyars , Jews , Serbs and Banat Czechs . In 1910, for example, only 23.5% of the population were members of the Romanian ethnic group.
In 2002 Orșova registered 21,965 people. Of these, 12,237 were Romanians, 241 Banat Czechs, 152 Banat mountainous Germans, 109 Serbs, 100 Roma, 93 Magyars and other ethnic groups. In 2011 only half of the 2002 population was registered. Of these, 9074 were Romanians, 133 Banat Czechs, 114 Roma, 92 Banat hill country Germans, 74 Serbs, 53 Magyars and the rest of them professed other ethnic groups.
Attractions
For the Catholic Church of the "Immaculate Conception of Mary" (Neprihănita Zămislire) , consecrated on November 26th, 1976, the Romanian state granted a special permit , since in communist Romania the building of churches was forbidden at that time. The sacred building was built by the Trustul de Construcții Montaj Timișoara according to the construction plans of Hans Fackelmann . In the 14 representations of the Way of the Cross in the church, Lenin is shown in the first station , Nadia Comăneci in the 12th station and John Lennon in the last . The church is a listed building.
