An arithmometer is a mechanical calculating machine for which the French Charles Xavier Thomas de Colmar (1785–1870) received a patent in 1820 . The arithmometer is based on the principle of the Leibniz machine . Mechanical adding machines were in use until the late 1970s.

Another manufacturer of arithmometers was Willgodt Theophil Odhner .

In Glashütte in Saxony , Arthur Burkhardt & Cie produced the first German calculating machine, the Burckhardt Arithmometer, in series from the 1870s.
