Strehaia is a city in Mehedinți County in Romania .
Geographical location
Strehaia is located in Little Wallachia on the Motru River . The district capital Drobeta Turnu Severin is about 40 km to the west.
history
Strehaia has been traceable in documents since the 15th century. The place was a seat of the Wallachian aristocratic family Craioveşti. In 1645 Prince Matei Basarab founded the Strehaia monastery. Weekly cattle markets have been held since 1671. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, Strehaia was a local administrative center. In 1921 the place was declared a city. The main line of business in Strehaia is agriculture.

In the 2002 census, 11,846 inhabitants were registered. 10,560 identified themselves as Romanians and 1279 as Roma .
traffic
The railway line from Orșova to Filiași runs through Strehaia . Currently (2009) around eight local trains run in both directions every day. In Strehaia the route branches off to Motru ; there are around three trains daily. Furthermore, the Europastraße 70 runs through the city. There are regular bus connections to Drobeta Turnu Severin and Craiova .
