Motru is a town in Gorj County in Romania .
Geographical location
Motru is located on a river of the same name in the west of Little Wallachia . The district capital Târgu Jiu is about 35 km northeast.
history
Motru was created by administrative decision in 1966 on the territory of the then municipality Ploştina , which together with seven other villages became part of the new city. The reason for the decision to found a city was the development of several hard coal deposits.
The region has been inhabited since the time of the Roman Empire at the latest ; In 1964 some silver coins from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211) were found in the district of Leurda . The oldest documented settlement on the territory of today's city is Ploştina (mentioned in a document in 1385).
In the villages incorporated today, some free farmers lived, others were subject to the monastery in Tismana .
In 2000 Motru was named a municipality ( Municipiul ) - that is, a more important city.
The most important industry in the city is mining; in addition, agriculture and animal husbandry play an important role, especially in the incorporated villages.

At the 2002 census there were 22,967 people in the city, including 22,718 Romanians , 91 Hungarians , 129 Roma and 15 Germans.

Motru has a rail connection via a line leading from Strehaia , which was put into operation in 1962. Local trains run to Craiova several times a day . There are also bus connections to the district capital Târgu Jiu . Motru is on the National Road Drum național 67 from Drobeta Turnu Severin to Râmnicu Vâlcea .
