history

Motru was created by administrative decision in 1966 on the territory of the then municipality Ploştina , which together with seven other villages became part of the new city. The reason for the decision to found a city was the development of several hard coal deposits.

The region has been inhabited since the time of the Roman Empire at the latest ; In 1964 some silver coins from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211) were found in the district of Leurda . The oldest documented settlement on the territory of today's city is Ploştina (mentioned in a document in 1385).

In the villages incorporated today, some free farmers lived, others were subject to the monastery in Tismana .

In 2000 Motru was named a municipality ( Municipiul ) - that is, a more important city.

The most important industry in the city is mining; in addition, agriculture and animal husbandry play an important role, especially in the incorporated villages.
