Târgu Jiu [ ˈtɨrgu ˈʒiu ] (until 1992 Tîrgu Jiu , historically also Tergu Jiu , Targulu Jiuliu , Tirguschu ; German  Turgukukuli ) is a city in Romania . As the capital of the Gorj district, it is located on the Jiu River (Eng. Schil ) in the foothills of the Southern Carpathians and has around 80,000 inhabitants. The place was first mentioned in a document in 1406 and has had town charter since 1597. The Orthodox cathedral was built in 1748–1764. In 1992 a university was founded.

Târgu Jiu

An outstanding sight is the sculpture ensemble by Constantin Brâncuși with the table of silence , the gate of the kiss and the infinite column . The ensemble was built in 1937/1938 as a commission from the Gorj women's league and is intended to commemorate the fallen soldiers of the First World War.

In the 1950s, the mayor at the time tried to tear down the work of art, but it was unsuccessful because the bulldozer engine was too weak. In 1973 the Bucharest government approved a book on the sculpture ensemble: Ion Miclea [photographer, 1931–2000]: [Constantin] Brâncusi la Tîrgu [officially today: Târgu] Jiu. Cuvînt Inainte de George Macuvescu. [Bucuresti:] 1973 Editura Pentru Turism; at the beginning 14 pages about Hobița , the birthplace of Brancusi. In 1996 the international World Monuments Fund (WMF) included the Târgu Jiu ensemble in the list of the world's hundred most endangered monuments . The World Bank then gave Romania a loan of 2.6 million US dollars for restoration.

The infinite column is now the main element in the city coat of arms.

concentration camp

In Târgu Jiu, Jewish men had been interned in a camp by order of Ion Antonescu since at least 1941 . Jews from other concentration camps were soon interned in the camp as well. In addition, the camp was used to intern communist and other political prisoners who opposed the dictatorship of Antonescu and his involvement in the war during the German Reich . After the royal coup in Romania in 1944 and the liberation of Romania from the German troops stationed there by the Red Army , the former concentration camp was used to detain remaining individuals who were loyal to the German Reich .

Other structures

In the south of the city, not far from the Jiu, is the 256 meter high chimney ( location ) of a thermal power station that never went into operation; in the southeast there is a medium wave transmitter with two transmission masts each 139 meters high.

Two hydropower plants on the dams in the west of the city are expected to generate around 40.5 megawatts in 2013  . Due to the high level of pollution in the reservoirs, the hydropower plants cannot deliver the amount of electricity they were hoping for.
