Florin Mergea (born January 26, 1985 in Craiova ) is a Romanian tennis player .

Career

Florin Mergea mainly plays doubles. So far, he has won 14 tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour with changing partners , four of them with his compatriot Horia Tecău . Before that, Mergea was able to celebrate great successes in his junior career. He won the junior title at the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon in 2003 in the final against Chris Guccione and was in the final of the Australian Open in the same year , which he lost to Marcos Baghdatis . In 2002 and 2003 he also won the junior doubles competition at Wimbledon with Horia Tecau. In addition, they reached the final of the Australian Open in both years and stood together at the top of the double world rankings for a long time .

After his tournament victory in 2013 in doubles with Lukáš Rosol in Vienna , the 2014 season was even more successful. With Oliver Marach he won his second title in Viña del Mar , while he moved into the semi-finals of the French Open with Marin Draganja and won the tournament in Hamburg . His current double partner is the Indian Rohan Bopanna . Together with Horia Tecau he won the silver medal in the doubles competition at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .

Florin Mergea has been playing for the Romanian Davis Cup team since 2003 . He has been nominated 15 times so far and has played a total of eleven doubles and two singles games in twelve matches.
