Julian Knowle (born April 29, 1974 in Lauterach , Vorarlberg ) is a former Austrian tennis player . He celebrated his greatest successes with various partners in doubles, including winning the 2007 title at the US Open . In 2004 he was in the final of Wimbledon and in 2007 in Shanghai in the final of the Tennis World Cup .

Beginnings

Knowle grew up in Vorarlberg. His name comes from his grandfather, who came from India , and his grandmother was Italian . At the age of 14 he was already one of the best tennis players of his age.

Career

singles

Knowle is one of the few players on the tour who plays forehand and backhand with both hands. He achieved his best ranking in singles with 86th place in 2002, when he was in round two at both the Australian Open and the French Open . From 2004, however, came the crash in the individual ranking. He had to qualify for almost every tournament, which he often survived at the beginning. Since Chennai 2005, however, he has never been in the main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament . It was not until 2012 that he tried again at an ATP tournament in Kuala Lumpur , as the qualification there was rather weak and he was already taking part in the doubles competition. After overcoming qualification, however, he failed in round one to Albert Ramos . Nevertheless, Knowle set the current record for the oldest participant who ever qualified for the main draw of an ATP tournament.

Double and end of career

Knowle specialized more and more in doubles. Parallel to his individual career , he was already celebrating great successes such as the 2004 Wimbledon finals with his then partner Nenad Zimonjić . From 2005 he played doubles with his compatriot Jürgen Melzer . With him he won two titles ( St. Petersburg and Casablanca ) and made further finals at the end of 2006. When Melzer concentrated more on singles in 2007, Knowle played with the Swede Simon Aspelin , with whom he celebrated successes. In the summer of 2007 he won three tournaments with him ( Pörtschach , Båstad and Halle ).

He reached his preliminary career high point on September 7, 2007, when he, again at Aspelin's side, won the double title at the US Open . In the quarterfinals, the number ten seeded duo beat the top seeded twins Mike and Bob Bryan . In the final, Aspelin / Knowle prevailed against the Czechs Lukáš Dlouhý and Pavel Vízner 7: 5 and 6: 4. Knowle is the second Austrian after Thomas Muster to win a Grand Slam tournament . In autumn of the same year the duo also reached the final of the Tennis Masters Cup , where they clearly had to admit defeat Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor 2: 6 and 3: 6.

In 2009 Knowle won the doubles competitions at the ATP tournaments in New Haven and Tokyo , again at Jürgen Melzer's side .

For the 2010 season Knowle planned the collaboration with the Swede Robert Lindstedt ; however, the attempt was ended in February after four initial defeats. They achieved their best result at the Open 13 in Marseille, where they advanced to the final. After that, Knowle played with Andy Ram . At the French Open he reached the final in mixed competition and the semi-finals in men's doubles . At Wimbledon he made it to the quarterfinals in mixed .

From 2011 he played repeatedly with changing partners.

Between August 2010 and June 2011, Knowle dropped from 17th to 83rd place in the world rankings and then took part for the first time since 2005 in tournaments of the lower endowed ATP Challenger Tour , which he held in Orbetello with Igor Zelenay and in Cordenons with Michael Kohlmann won. In 2012 he was successful again on the ATP World Tour and won with František Čermák in Kitzbühel , 2013 with Filip Polášek in Zagreb and Casablanca and 2014 with Marcelo Melo in Auckland and with Andre Begemann in Halle . The two following seasons he was only able to win tournaments on the Challenger Tour, namely in 2015 in Prostějov with Philipp Oswald and in 2016 in Prague with Igor Zelenay and in Mons with Jürgen Melzer .

On June 3, 2019, Knowle ended his active career due to ongoing health problems.
