The Qatar ExxonMobil Open is a tennis tournament that has been played on hard courts in Doha , Qatar , since 1993 . It takes place annually in January and is traditionally one of the three ATP competitions with which the season opens, alongside the tournaments in Brisbane and Chennai . Since the tournament will be held two weeks before the Australian Open and will be played on the same surface as in Melbourne, the event is considered a very good preparation for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. The Qatar Open are part of the ATP World Tour 250 and with over a million dollars in prize money, they are the highest endowed tournament in the series.
The game is played in the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex , where the WTA Tour Championships were held between 2008 and 2010 . The record winner in singles with three titles is Roger Federer , in doubles Rafael Nadal with four titles.
