Roberto Bautista Agut (born April 14, 1988 in Castellón de la Plana ) is a Spanish tennis player .

Career

The year 2011

On the ATP World Tour 2011 , he was unable to participate in a main round, as he failed in all tournaments in the qualifying rounds. On the ATP Challenger Tour , his best result was taking part in the finals at the tournament in Alessandria, where he was defeated by the Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta 6: 3, 3: 6, 5: 7. He finished the year at position 176 in the world rankings .

The year 2012

At the beginning of the year he qualified for the tournament in Doha and met the German Matthias Bachinger in the first round . He clearly lost the game in straight sets 3: 6, 4: 6. At the Australian Open , he made it into the main round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in three qualifying rounds . In the first round, however, was again the end of the line after he lost to Ricardo Mello 4-6, 4-6, 5-7. Even at the tournament in Montpellier , he did not give his opponents a chance in the three qualifying rounds, but still did not get past the first main round and had to admit defeat to Édouard Roger-Vasselin . This was followed by a Challenger tournament in Quimper , where he was able to move into the semi-finals. At the ATP tournament in Marseille he won his three qualifying rounds and met Igor Kunitsyn in the first round . He clearly lost the game 4: 6, 4: 6. At the first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the year in Indian Wells , he failed in the first qualifying round against Andrei Golubew , who lost to world number one Novak Đoković in the second round of the tournament . At the second Masters tournament in Miami , he once again survived the qualifying rounds and thus moved into the main round of the tournament. He won his opening game against Andreas Seppi , but lost to French Gilles Simon in two sets in the second round . In Rome he secured the first Challenger title of his career. On April 22nd, he defeated the Portuguese Rui Machado in three sets in the final . Other good results followed on the Challenger Tour: he won two more titles in the same year. He won the tournaments in Orbetello and Pozoblanco and improved his ranking by 98 positions from 178th to 80th in the world by the end of the year.

The year 2013

At the first tournament of the year in Chennai , he made it into the final of an ATP tournament for the first time. There he met the Serb Janko Tipsarević and lost the final in three sets. On the way to the final he beat the top seeded Czech Tomáš Berdych in the quarterfinals and in the semifinals the number five seeded French Benoît Paire . Thanks to this good performance, he also improved significantly in the ATP ranking and was positioned at number 55 after the first tournament of the season. This enabled him for the first time to qualify directly for the Australian Open . He won his opening game against the Italian Fabio Fognini in just five sets. In the second round he met the seeded Austrian Jürgen Melzer and was eliminated after a five-sentence thriller.

The year 2014

On June 21, Bautista Agut won the Topshelf Open in 's-Hertogenbosch with a 2: 6, 7: 6 2 , 6: 4 in the final against Benjamin Becker and with it his first title on the ATP tour. Three weeks later he also reached the final at the MercedesCup in Stuttgart , which he won against Lukáš Rosol in three sets. With this victory he was in the top 20 of the world rankings for the first time on July 14, 2014.

Davis Cup

In 2014 Roberto Bautista Agut was nominated for the first time for the Spanish Davis Cup team . He made his debut in the first round against Germany , where he was defeated by Philipp Kohlschreiber . He also lost the second game against Daniel Brands and then retired with his team.
