Pablo Andújar Alba (born January 23, 1986 in Cuenca ) is a Spanish tennis player .
life and career
2002–2005: Successes as a junior and first future tournaments
Pablo Andújar started playing tennis at the age of six. As a junior he was able to win several tournaments in 2003 and 2004, and in June 2004 he rose to fifth place in the junior world rankings. His greatest success as a junior was at the 2004 French Open , where he reached the quarterfinals in singles and won the title in doubles alongside Marcel Granollers .
As early as 2002 he entered a future tournament for adults for the first time with a wild card . In July 2004, he won a future match for the first time, which put him in the tennis world rankings. In March 2005, Andújar reached the finals of a future tournament in Italy for the first time, and four months later he won his first title in Spain. In October 2005 he was in two more future tournament finals, one of which he was able to win. At the end of the year he was ranked 361th in the world.
2006–2007: First Challenger title and ATP debut
In 2006, Pablo Andújar played more and more tournaments on the ATP Challenger Tour . In July he won his first Challenger title in Rimini . Just a month later, the second title followed in Vigo with a final victory over the former top 30 player Fernando Vicente . He also won the doubles competition in Vigo alongside Marcel Granollers . At the US Open , he wanted to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time , but failed in the second qualifying round. After his successes in the summer, Andújar had risen to the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time, but by the end of the season he lost a few places again. In doubles he won a total of three Challenger titles with Granollers that year, he also reached two other finals and ended the year in 174th place in the doubles world rankings.
In 2007 there was no title win for Andújar. However, he qualified for the first time this season for ATP tournaments and reached the round of 16 in Valencia and Barcelona . At the French Open , he just failed in the third qualifying round to Iván Navarro . In the further course of the season he reached the final of a Challenger tournament twice, in Trani and Seville , so that by the end of the season he improved to 146th place in the world rankings.
2008–2009: Advance into the top 100
In April 2008 Andújar reached the round of 16 in Valencia after defeating Kristof Viegen like last year . A month later he failed at the French Open in the third qualifying round, but he moved into the main draw as one of seven lucky losers and was able to win his first match at a Grand Slam tournament against Filippo Volandri . In the second round he then lost in four sets against Fernando González, who was in 24th position . In May and June 2008 he lost the finals of the Challenger tournaments in Telde and Reggio nell'Emilia , followed by two titles in a row in August 2008 in Vigo and San Sebastián . Andújar was in the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time. At the US Open he moved up as a substitute in the main field, but lost in the first round in three sets against Nicolas Devilder . In doubles he competed alongside Nicolás Almagro , but they lost in straight sets against eventual tournament winners Bob and Mike Bryan .
Also at the Australian Open 2009 Andújar moved up as a substitute in the main field, but lost smoothly against Gilles Simon, who was sixth . In February 2009 he was eliminated from four ATP tournaments in the first round. Only at the French Open he was able to win another match against Robby Ginepri . With a second round win against Paul-Henri Mathieu Andújar could have met Roger Federer in the third round ; the Frenchman, who was placed in 32nd position, got the upper hand in three sets. In Wimbledon as in the two preparatory tournaments on grass, further first round defeats followed. Andújar was not able to build on the successes of last year at Challenger tournaments this year, his greatest success was the final in Orbetello . After he had slipped to rank 192 in the meantime, Andújar ended the season in 160th place in the world rankings.
2010: First ATP final
The 2010 season was then more successful again. In Buenos Aires , Pablo Andújar was able to win his first ATP match against Óscar Hernández since June 2009, before he was eliminated by Albert Montañés . A week later he won in Meknes together with Flavio Cipolla his first Challenger title in doubles since 2006. After a Challenger final in Monza , Andújar was able to qualify at the French Open 2010 and he reached after a victory over Simone Bolelli as in the the second round two years earlier. There he was eliminated in a five-set match against Thomaz Bellucci, who was placed in 24th position . In June 2010 another Challenger defeat in the final followed in Reggio nell'Emilia . After a second round at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart against Gaël Monfils , he reached the final of the Challenger tournament of Orbetello , which he won in two sets against Édouard Roger-Vasselin , as in the previous year . In August 2010 he reached another Challenger final in Geneva , but lost to the young Grigor Dimitrov , although he had already led 3-0 in the third set. In September 2010, then followed at the ATP tournament in Bucharest the previous career highlight for Andújar: After successful qualification he defeated in the second round to set at position 2 Florian Mayer and reached victories over the top 100 player Pablo Cuevas and Marcel Granollers be first ATP final. There he lost after a tight first set in the end with 5: 7, 1: 6 against Juan Ignacio Chela . In the world rankings, he made a jump to 77th place. In November 2010, Andújar was able to win an ATP match on hard court in Valencia - with a wildcard - against Dmitri Tursunow for the first time in his career, before he was eliminated by the eventual finalist Marcel Granollers.
2011–2012: First ATP title and promotion to the top 50
The year 2011 began for Andújar with a first round defeat at the Australian Open against Xavier Malisse . In February 2011 he reached the quarter-finals in Costa do Sauípe by defeating the sixth seeded Tommy Robredo , but lost there smoothly to Ricardo Mello . In doubles he was able to move into the final together with Daniel Gimeno Traver , where they lost in two sets against Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares . In March 2011, Andújar reached the third round of a Masters tournament for the first time in Miami with a three-set win over Fernando Verdasco , who was ninth , in which he was eliminated from the later quarter-finalist Kevin Anderson . At the clay court tournament in Casablanca , Andújar confirmed his good form and marched through to the finals with victories over the seeded Jérémy Chardy and Albert Montañés . There he clearly won in two sets against Potito Starace and secured his first ATP title. In the world rankings, he made it into the top 50 for the first time. After he failed in the quarter-finals in Nice in May 2011 at the eventual tournament winner Nicolás Almagro , Andújar reached the second round of the French Open as in previous years. There he lost to world number one and later tournament winner Rafael Nadal in three sets. After being eliminated in the first round of the lawn tournaments in Halle , Eastbourne and Wimbledon , Andújar was able to reach his next ATP final on clay in Stuttgart . There he was clearly defeated by his compatriot Juan Carlos Ferrero . In August 2011 Andújar retired from the American hard court tournaments including the US Open in the first round. At the last clay court tournament of the season in Bucharest , however, he reached the final as in the previous year. He defeated Juan Ignacio Chela in the semifinals , against whom he had lost in the 2010 final. In this year's final, Andújar already led 3-1 against Florian Mayer, but then only won one game and lost in two straight sets in the end. In the last five tournaments of the season, all of which were played on hard courts, Andújar could only reach the second round once. He finished the year in 46th place in the world rankings.
In his first five tournaments in 2012 he only reached the second round at the Australian Open by defeating Igor Kunitsyn . At the end of February he defeated Florian Mayer, who was seeded in 5th position, in Acapulco , but was then eliminated in the quarter-finals against the top seeded eventual tournament winner David Ferrer . At the first Masters tournament of the season in Indian Wells , which was played on a hard court, Andújar was able to surprisingly reach the round of 16 and again won against Florian Mayer. In the last sixteen he won at least one set against world number one Novak Đoković , but ultimately lost clearly in three sets against the favorite. In April 2012, Andújar reached the final in Casablanca as in the previous year and defended his title with a two-set victory over Albert Ramos . In the world rankings, he reached a new personal record with 36th place.
