life and career

Until 2006: junior career and college time

Kevin Anderson started playing tennis at the age of six. From 2001 to 2004 he took part in international junior tournaments and was able to reach rank 28 in the junior world rankings. After he was able to celebrate his first successes as a professional at future tournaments in South Africa in 2004, he moved to Champaign in the United States in 2005 and played there for the college team of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . Together with his partner Ryan Rowe , he won the 2006 national championships in doubles .

2005–2007: First successes on the Challenger Tour

At the same time, he continued to play future tournaments and, in November 2005, his first Challenger tournament in Champaign. In the following year he made it to the quarterfinals at the same tournament.

After he had reached a Challenger final for the first time in Winnetka in July 2007 , Kevin Anderson qualified for an ATP tournament for the first time in New Haven in August 2007 . However, he was eliminated in the first round against Arnaud Clément . A month later he won his first title in this category at the Challenger tournament in New Orleans by beating Sam Warburg in the final and was also able to win the doubles competition alongside Ryler DeHeart .

2008: Grand Slam debut, first ATP final and entry into the Top 100

In 2008, Anderson immediately qualified for the main draw at the Australian Open , but lost there in the first round to Alejandro Falla . Nevertheless, he entered the top 200 in the world rankings for the first time. At the ATP tournament in Las Vegas he was also able to qualify for the main field and failed after victories, among others over the top 50 player Michaël Llodra, only in the final to Sam Querrey . He was able to qualify again at the Masters tournament in Miami , where he sensationally won in the second round against the defending champion and third in the world rankings Novak Đoković . In April 2008 he played in Finland for the first time for South Africa in the Davis Cup and was able to contribute two individual victories to the 4-1 victory. By participating in the finals at the Challenger tournament in Surbiton , he made it into the top 100, so that at Wimbledon he qualified directly for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time . In the singles he failed in the first round, but in doubles he made it to the quarterfinals alongside his partner Robert Lindstedt . In August 2008 he went to South Africa at the Olympic Games , where he lost to Nicolas Kiefer in the second round after a first round win over Komlavi Loglo . In September 2008 he helped South Africa to a 3-2 win against Monaco in the Davis Cup and thus promotion to Europe / Africa Group I. In November 2008 he returned to the Champaign tournament and secured himself there a win over Kevin Kim his second Challenger title. A week later, the second Challenger title in doubles followed in Knoxville .

2009–2010: setbacks and comeback

2009 at the Open De Rennes Challenger

2009 was less successful for Kevin Anderson. He slipped back out of the top 100 and was only able to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament at the Australian Open , where he lost to Marin Čilić in the first round . The biggest individual successes of this season were the final victory against Blaž Kavčič at the Challenger tournament in Sanremo , two Challenger finals in Granby and Binghamton as well as the qualification and entry into the second round of the ATP tournament at the Queen's Club in London . In doubles, Anderson reached three Challenger Finals this season, of which he won two in Lexington and Vancouver .

In 2010 he was able to qualify again for the main draw of the Australian Open , but had no chance in the first round match against the eventual finalist Andy Murray . With good results at the Masters tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami and a Challenger title in Baton Rouge , he managed to return to the top 100 in April 2010. This qualified him for the French Open , where he played in the first round met Edouard Roger-Vasselin , who started with a wildcard . Anderson won the first two sets confidently, but gambled away this lead and lost the match in five sets. The same happened to him a month later at Wimbledon , when he lost again after a two- set lead against Nikolai Dawydenko, who was seeded at number 7 . In July 2010, Anderson achieved his best result of the season so far in Atlanta when he advanced to the semifinals after victories over Janko Tipsarević , Donald Young and Lukáš Lacko . There he lost to John Isner in three sets in extreme heat . At the Masters tournament in Toronto , Kevin Anderson reached the round of 16 after successfully qualifying and defeating Sam Querrey, who was placed in 16 position, where he was defeated by world number one Rafael Nadal . At the US Open 2010 he was then able to win a Grand Slam match for the first time when he defeated Somdev Devvarman in the first round . In the second round he met Thomaz Bellucci , seeded in 26th position , whom he beat in five sets in an almost four-hour match. In the third round, however, it was the end of the line after three sets against Richard Gasquet . At the end of the season in October 2010, Anderson reached another Challenger final in Seoul , which he lost to Lu Yen-hsun . At the end of his best season to date, he had improved by exactly one hundred places from 161st to 61st.

2011: First ATP title and establishment in the top 50 of the world rankings

At the beginning of 2011, Kevin Anderson reached an ATP semi-finals in Brisbane for the third time in his career. There he lost in three sets against Andy Roddick, who was in second place . At the Australian Open , Anderson was eliminated from qualifier Blaž Kavčič in the first round as in the last three years. At the subsequent ATP tournament in his hometown of Johannesburg , Kevin Anderson reached an ATP final for the second time by defeating Adrian Mannarino . There he prevailed against Somdev Devvarman in three sets and won his first title. In March 2011, Anderson reached the quarterfinals of a Masters tournament for the first time in Miami . He defeated among others the winner of 2008, Nikolai Dawydenko , as well as the seeded Guillermo García-López and John Isner . In the quarter-finals, he then met the world number two Novak Đoković , whom he had surprisingly defeated three years earlier in the same place. This time he had no chance against the favorite, but still improved further in the world rankings to 33rd, his best so far. After participating in the quarter-finals in Estoril in April 2011, Kevin Anderson reached the second round of the French Open for the first time in May 2011 by defeating Nicolas Mahut . There he was defeated by the later quarter-finalist Juan Ignacio Chela in five sets . Also at Wimbledon he was eliminated in the second round when he lost to Novak Đoković for the third time this year. In July 2011, Anderson returned to South Africa in the Davis Cup for the first time in three years, leading his team to a 3-1 win over the Netherlands. In August 2011 Kevin Anderson was able to reach the round of 16 at the Canada Masters tournament in Montreal with a clear victory over the defending champion Andy Murray, who was in fourth position, as in the previous year, but lost there against Stanislas Wawrinka . At the following US Open , Anderson defeated Michaël Llodra, who was seeded in 29th position, in three sets in the second round , but then had to admit defeat to 8th-placed Mardy Fish . In the following Davis Cup relegation game against Croatia for entry into the world group, Anderson won his individual against Ivan Dodig , but could not prevent South Africa's 4-1 defeat. A quarterfinal participation at the tournament in Beijing , where he defeated Andy Roddick, who was sixth before he was eliminated by the later finalist Marin Čilić , brought Kevin Anderson in the top 30 in the world for the first time in October 2011. Three weeks later he was in Vienna for the third time this season in an ATP semi-final by beating local hero Jürgen Melzer , but had to admit defeat to Juan Martín del Potro in three sets .

2012–2014: Second ATP title and entry into the top 20

2014 in Madrid

In January 2012 Kevin Anderson reached the third round at the Australian Open for the first time, but lost there against Tomáš Berdych, who was placed in 7th position . In doubles he was able to reach the final together with Frank Moser , but where they were narrowly defeated by Mark Knowles and Xavier Malisse . Two weeks later, Anderson reached the semi-finals in Delray Beach by defeating Andy Roddick , fending off three match points. After a two-set win over the top seeded John Isner , Anderson met the qualifier Marinko Matosevic in the final . He also defeated this in two sets and thus secured his second ATP title.

In the 2013 season, Kevin Anderson reached the round of 16 for the first time at the Australian Open and the French Open , and at Wimbledon he was able to advance to the third round for the first time. He also reached three ATP finals: in Brisbane he was defeated by Bernard Tomic , in Casablanca he had to admit defeat to Tommy Robredo and in Atlanta he lost to John Isner . These successes gave him his best position in the world rankings to date with rank 19.

In 2014 Kevin Anderson was able to move into the round of 16 of the Australian Open again. Following this, he reached the finals in both Delray Beach and Acapulco , but lost both finals in three sets. In Acapulco it was successful in the doubles, as Anderson Matthew Ebden in the final Feliciano Lopez and Max Mirnyi with 6: 3 and 6: 3 defeated. This was his first ATP title win in doubles. 2014 was an overall successful year at the Grand Slam tournaments, he only missed the round of 16 at the US Open . He also reached the quarterfinals in two Masters tournaments, namely in Indian Wells , which he lost to Roger Federer, and in Paris , where he was defeated by Tomáš Berdych . He finished the year in 16th place, his best place to date.

2015–2016: Entry into the top 10 and injury

In 2015 there was also a consistency in the Grand Slams: At the US Open , he reached a Grand Slam quarter-finals for the first time in his career. He lost this smoothly to Stan Wawrinka . He won his only title of the season in Winston-Salem - with a 6: 3, 7: 5 over Pierre-Hugues Herbert . In addition, there were further finals at the tournaments in Memphis against Kei Nishikori and in the Queens Club against Andy Murray . Although Anderson was eliminated early at the tournament in Tokyo , he moved into the top 10 of the world rankings for the first time, but then ended the season in 12th place. The 2016 season was less successful due to a knee injury he sustained in Chennai. He could only get past the first round with his entry into the third round at the US Open . Also due to his injuries, he did not reach the final in 2016 and finally ended the season in 67th place.

Since 2017: First Grand Slam Finals

He started the 2017 season in Memphis , where he failed in the first round to Damir Džumhur . At the French Open and Wimbledon , he made it to the round of 16. He also reached two other finals. In Washington, DC he lost to Alexander Zverev and a few weeks later he lost in his first Grand Slam final at the US Open in the final against Rafael Nadal . In the entire course of the tournament, Anderson did not have to beat any player from the top 10, his best placed opponent was Pablo Carreño Busta in the semifinals with 12th place.

The year 2018 started with a final in Pune , he lost in straight sets to Gilles Simon .
