Somdev Kishore Devvarman (also Somdev Dev Varman ; born February 13, 1985 in Guwahati , Assam ) is a former Indian tennis player . His greatest successes were reaching the final at the ATP tournament in Chennai and winning the gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in singles.

Career

Devvarman grew up near Chennai before attending the University of Virginia in 2005. For this he was active in college tennis from 2004 to 2008 . In May 2007 he became American individual champion after victories over Kevin Anderson and John Isner, among others . The following year he was able to defend his title.

In 2002 Devvarman first played a smaller future tournament in Lucknow , where he was eliminated in the first round. His first victory on the Future Tour was the tournament in November 2002 in his home country. Other tournaments followed, in which Devvarman was often eliminated in the first round. In March 2004 he won his first future tournament in Calcutta at the age of 19 . At that time he was 967th in the tennis world rankings.

On July 31, 2006 Devvarman played for the first time a tournament as part of the ATP Tour. In Washington he was eliminated in the first round against the Argentine Edgardo Massa with 4: 6 and 0: 6. In January 2008, the Indian won another future tournament in the United States, followed by two more tournament victories in June of the same year, and in July Devvarman won his first Challenger tournament. At this tournament in Lexington he beat well-known players such as Bobby Reynolds , Xavier Malisse and Robert Kendrick . In August 2008, the young Devvarman was able to reach a quarter-finals at an ATP tournament for the first time. In Washington he beat Taylor Dent and Robert Kendrick, but then lost to Igor Kunitsyn .

The January 2009 tournament in Chennai is one of Devvarman's greatest achievements. After beating Kevin Kim , Carlos Moyá and Ivo Karlović , he moved into the final of the tournament without a fight against Rainer Schüttler - due to an injury to the German. Here, however, he was defeated by Marin Čilić in two sets. In 2010 Devvarman managed to defeat Australian Greg Jones in the finals of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, winning the first gold medal in men's singles in the history of the Games. In February 2011 Devvarman reached an ATP final in Johannesburg for the second time in his career. There he won the first set against Kevin Anderson , but ultimately lost in three sets.

He ended his career on January 1, 2017.
