Marsel İlhan (born June 11, 1987 in Samarkand , Uzbek SSR ) is a Turkish tennis player .

He has been number one in his country for a long time and the first Turkish player to reach the second round of singles at Wimbledon , as well as at the US Open and Australian Open and Roland Garros . As the first Turkish player, he also won several tournaments on the Challenger Tour .

Career

Childhood and the first years

İlhan was born in Uzbekistan in 1987 , immigrated to Turkey with his mother in 2004 and started playing for the Istanbul Taçspor Tennis Club. He was sponsored by Kia Motors Turkey. After several years of intensive training with his new coach Can Üner, a former Turkish tennis player, he was able to improve his position in the world rankings from No. 1320 to 320 within one year.

Breakthrough in 2008

He beat the Croatian Ivo Klec on July 13, 2008 6: 4 and 6: 4 at the Israel Open. At the Grand Slam tournaments at Wimbledon and the US Open 2008 , however, he then failed in each qualification.

2009

In early 2009, he was unable to get good results due to a knee injury. After losing to Flavio Cipolla in Dubai in the second qualifying round, he then won 24 of his following 27 games. He won two future tournaments in Antalya and reached the final at the Challenger tournament in Izmir , which he lost to the Italian Andrea Stoppini .

At the Thailand Open in Bangkok İlhan won all games in the qualifying rounds and thus reached the main draw of an ATP World Tour tournament for the first time . In the first round he was able to prevail against the German Benjamin Becker in three sets, but was then defeated in the second round against the Austrian Jürgen Melzer . In October he qualified for the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships in Tokyo, but was eliminated in the first round against Gaël Monfils .

At the US Open 2009 , İlhan qualified for the peloton for the first time in his career. In the qualifying tournament he had beaten the American Ryan Harrison , then also the French Sébastien de Chaunac and the Brazilian Ricardo Mello . In the first round he defeated the Belgian Christophe Rochus in five sets with 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5 and 7: 5, which meant the first victory of a Turkish player in a Grand Slam. However, İlhan lost to local hero John Isner 3: 6, 4: 6 and 6: 7 1 in the second round . Since the beginning of 2009 he has been sponsored by the Yeşilyurt Sport Club .

2010

At the Australian Open , İlhan became the first Turkish player to qualify for the main draw in Melbourne. Despite the defeat in the qualifying final against the German Dieter Kindlmann, he moved into the main field as a lucky loser for the injured Gilles Simon . He reached the second round after beating the French Sébastien Grosjean , in which he lost in three sets against Fernando González, who was in eleventh place . Although he failed in qualification to Simone Bolelli in Roland Garros, but he reached the second round at Wimbledon after three successful qualification and one first round match. In the first round İlhan was already 2-0 down against Marcos Daniel , but still won 6: 7, 4 , 4: 6, 6: 2, 6: 3 and 6: 1. He then lost to Romanian Victor Hănescu in four sets with 4: 6, 4: 6, 6: 3 and 3: 6. At the US Open he was eliminated in the first qualifying round.

His highlight of the season was on September 20th, when he won his second Challenger tournament in Banja Luka against the Spaniard Pere Riba in straight sets. The following week he repeatedly reached the final at the Challenger in Izmir, but lost it again, this time against Somdev Devvarman . At the end of the season he finished 90th in the tennis world rankings .

2011

At the tournament in Roland Garros, Marsel İlhan defeated former world number two Tommy Haas in four sets in the first round . In the second round he was narrowly defeated by Guillermo García-López in five sets with 4: 6, 6: 1, 2: 6, 6: 4 and 11:13.
