Flavio Cipolla (born October 20, 1983 in Rome ) is an Italian tennis player .
Career
Cipolla has been a professional tennis player since 2003. He won his first individual title in 2006 at the Challenger tournament in Turin , when he defeated Marcel Granollers . Cipolla achieved its first triumph in doubles in 2005 in Mantua , alongside his compatriot Alessandro Motti . Among other things, he played successfully in doubles with Simon Stadler (victory in Saransk 2005) and Tomas Behrend (victory in Barcelona 2006). In early 2008 he was able to win the Challenger tournament in Nouméa in both singles and doubles.
In 2016, he surprisingly achieved his first ATP tournament victory. With his Israeli doubles partner Dudi Sela , he was able to win the ATP tournament in Istanbul in the ATP World Tour 250 category on May 1st at the age of 32 . For his doubles partner it was also the first tournament victory at ATP level.
Grand Slam record
In 2007, Cipolla played a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. After he failed in qualifying at the Australian Open , he defeated Davide Sanguinetti , Marcel Granollers and Benjamin Balleret in qualifying for the 2007 French Open . In the first main round of the tournament he defeated Teimuras Gabashvili , who had to give up during the game. The following game against the tournament favorites Rafael Nadal he clearly lost 2: 6, 1: 6, 4: 6.
In 2008 Cipolla qualified for the US Open in New York City . In the first round he defeated Jan Hernych in five sets (6: 7, 6: 4, 2: 6, 7: 6, 7: 6) in a four-hour match. He then defeated Lu Yen-hsun in four sets in the second round , but was eliminated in the third round against Stanislas Wawrinka despite a two-set lead in five sets (7: 5, 7: 6, 4: 6, 0: 6, 4: 6), also in a four-hour match.
At the Australian Open 2009 Cipolla defeated Dmitri Tursunow in the first round in four sets, but was eliminated in the second round against Tommy Haas in three sets.
